UCC calls upon Ukrainian Canadian Community to assist survivors of Hurricane Katrina

The President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Irene (Orysia Sushko) has called upon the Ukrainian Canadian Community to support all efforts that aim to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

“The devastation caused by Katrina is beyond belief,” stated UCC President Sushko, “The scenes we witness on television shake our souls to the core. As a community which has large numbers of former refugees and displaced persons in it, we feel as special bond with those that are now suffering in the United States. Ukrainian Canadians want to help relieve this distress. The survivors will need our help for a long time to come.”

UCC has arranged with Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, Inc. to handle the collection of money for eventual distribution to American aid agencies. Those wishing to help are urged to send cheques or money orders to UCSS at 2445 Bloor Street West, Toronto ON M6S 1P7. Income tax receipts can be issued by UCSS for amounts over $10.00.

Additionally, the UCC commends the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada (204.338.7801, http://www.archeparchy.ca/news/2005/news050021.htm) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (204.586.3093, http://www.uocc.ca/Hurricane%20Relief%20Appeal.Eng.pdf) for taking the lead in generating aid for the storms victims. Those wishing to lend support through a religious community may do so by contacting the Consistories of the two churches.

UCC urges all UCC Branches and Member organizations to coordinate some type of relief activity. Ensure that the Ukrainian Canadian Community makes a significant contribution to this world-wide effort!
