A Letter to the Hon. Jean Augustine

Dear Ms. Augustine:

It is with deep concern and great disappointment that I write to you in a matter of importance to the Ukrainian Canadian community.  On Saturday December 3, 2005, during an airing of the CBC Radio program The House, you made disparaging remarks about Ukrainian Canadians.  Commenting on recent events in the Liberal riding association of Etobicoke-Lakeshore, you are heard to say:

“On one side of the room were all the Ukrainian people talking in Ukrainian, organising each other in Ukrainian, and the other side were the rest of us Canadians.”

As a former Secretary of State for Multiculturalism, you should have been the last person to state that people who publicly express their heritage are somehow un-Canadian.  That you mention this in the context of dismissing political foes should be deeply troubling to all Canadians.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress asks that you do the right thing and publicly apologise to all Ukrainian Canadians for these hurtful remarks.  We would most gladly accept such an apology and would then consider the matter closed.

Sincerely,

Irene Sushko
President, Ukrainian Canadian Congress
