UCC supports amendments to the Immigration Act

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress supports the initiatives introduced by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, the Honourable Diane Finley in Bill C-57 which would assist in curbing the scourge of human trafficking. This Act would amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to allow the Minister of Immigration to provide written instructions to immigration officers identifying individuals who are at risk of humiliating and degrading treatment as well as sexual exploitation. These instructions would allow the officers to deny work permits to individuals where there is clear evidence of risk especially in suspected cases of trafficking.

UCC President Orysia Sushko, who took part in consultations in Ottawa with the Federal Government before the introduction of the Bill in the House of Commons, commented, “This is an important move forward. Disrupting the process of human trafficking by preventing the victims from leaving their home countries is one step in curbing this international slave trade. UCC was mandated at its last Triennial Congress to cooperate with NGOs and governments who battle human trafficking. Each year, thousands of mostly young women are lured from Ukraine into the underworld of the international sex trade. We therefore welcome this Bill.”

Orysia Sushko noted the vital role played by Winnipeg area MP Joy Smith (Kildonan – St. Paul) and vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Status of Women in this matter. “Ms. Smith is truly committed to this issue and has worked tirelessly on bringing the matter to the forefront by creating awareness within the Canadian community” said Sushko.
