On May 24, 2007 Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada, Ihor Ostash, passed on to Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko $50,000 as a contribution from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Embassy of Ukraine to the building fund of the Children’s Hospital of the Future. The hospital is a project of the Ukraina 3000 Fund of which Mrs. Yushchenko is the Head of the Supervisory Board.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress was represented at the ceremony in Kyiv by Larissa Lozowchuk, a Canadian working in Kyiv on a CIDA funded development project. Ms. Lozowchuk, who has participated in past UCC-sponsored election observer missions, voiced the support of Ukrainian Canadians for the project. She noted that this support would continue in the future.

The financial contribution represented the proceeds from an April 18, 2007 banquet in honour of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney which was co-sponsored by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada. The funds are meant to assist in the constructing and equipping of a room in the yet to be built hospital. A permanent plaque identifying the UCC-Embassy partnership and the event which engendered the donation will commemorate this Canadian contribution.

In accepting the financial assistance, Mrs. Yushchenko said “We are tremendously impressed with the fact that the Canadians care so much about gravely ill Ukrainian children. I thank you for your cordiality and for your noble hearts.”

Commenting on the happy occasion of the presentation, UCC President Orysia Sushko stated, “UCC is doubly pleased. Firstly, we were able to honour a great Canadian in the person of Mr. Mulroney who helped Ukraine at an important juncture in its history and concurrently enjoyed a positive relationship with the Ukrainian Canadian community. Secondly, we are able to concretely be of assistance to Ukraine’s future, by assisting in the better health care of its children. I also take this occasion to thank Ambassador Ostash for his cooperation in the planning and execution of the Mulroney Banquet. Mr. Ostash is untiring in his work to develop positive and increased Canada-Ukraine relations; the community is truly appreciative of his efforts.”
