| In response to media reports about the use of force by Chinese authorities against Tibetan patriots, Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) President Paul Grod has written to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt. Hon Stephen Harper, to the Leader of the Official Opposition, Hon. Stéphane Dion, to New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton and to Gilles Duceppe, leader of the Bloc Québécois expressing the support of the UCC for the Tibetan people as they engage in a concerted effort to protect their civil liberties and human rights and to preserve their rich cultural and religious heritage, in order to secure their freedom and autonomy.
Paul Grod asked that the Government of Canada send Canadian officials to Tibet to monitor the on‐going situation there. Should it prove true that deliberate measures are being taken to suppress the Tibetan people, the UCC urged Canada to consider commensurate diplomatic and trade measures while simultaneously revising immigration provisions to allow for Tibetans fleeing political, cultural and religious oppression to find asylum in Canada. Additionally, the UCC requested that the Government of Canada to make Tibet’s plight a matter for immediate discussion in the General Assembly of the United Nations and with other international organizations. |
