UCC commends Prime Minister Harper for supporting Ukraine’s NATO bid

Winnipeg – April 2, 2008 – Today at the NATO Summit in Bucharest, Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed Canada’s strong support for Ukraine to move towards membership in the NATO alliance. “The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) commends Prime Minister Harper for urging other leaders to support Ukraine’s request to join NATO’s Membership Action Plan,” stated Paul Grod, UCC’s National President. “I echo the Prime Minister’s words that Ukraine has made great progress on democratization and in opening up its economy in recent years, thereby demonstrating that it shares the values of Canada and our NATO allies.”

The UCC has consistently urged the Government of Canada that bringing Ukraine into the alliance would accelerate its pace of democratic reform and economic development while strengthening geopolitical stability in the region. With these statements, Canada continues to demonstrate its leadership in international arena. We encourage the Prime Minister and the Canadian delegation to continue interceding with those NATO allies who have not yet agreed to support Ukraine.
