| In a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) applauded his condemnation of Russia’s recent military attacks on Georgia. The UCC also commended The Hon. Bev Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, for her announcement on August 12, 2008 that Canada will provide up to $1,000,000 to assist people affected by the recent fighting in Georgia.
“We are extremely troubled by Russia’s blatant aggression and unrestrained attempts to militarily assert its sphere of influence in the territories of the former Soviet Union”, stated Paul Grod, UCC’s National President. “It has become clear that the “peacekeeping” mission in Georgia established in 1992, and comprised of Russian, Georgian, and Ossetian forces, is no longer viable. We call upon the Government of Canada to leverage its respectable peacekeeping credentials and spearhead the formation of an international force to monitor the French-mediated ceasefire in Georgia and its territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.” In its statement to the Prime Minister of Canada, the UCC expressed concern over Russia’s political and military backing of separatists in Georgia. It sets a dangerous precedent for Crimean Ukraine, where personnel with the Black Sea fleet have been encouraging the large Russian population in calling for unification with Moscow. Such activities, combined with provocative statements by leading Russian politicians challenging Ukrainian authority in the region threaten not only the stability of Ukraine but international security. |
