Winnipeg, MB – October 20, 2008

On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and all its member organizations, UCC National President Paul Grod congratulated Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the elected MPs and all the candidates in the 2008 Federal Election.

Our community duly recognized and expressed its appreciation to those candidates that have supported important issues, such as:

  • recognizing the Holodomor as a genocide;
  • providing redress for the internment of Ukrainian Canadians in WW1; and
  • supporting Ukraine’s bid to join NATO.

In his comments to the Prime Minister, Mr. Grod stated that “in addition to being one of Canada’s largest ethnic communities, the Ukrainian Canadian community is also one of its founding peoples. As such, it is our hope that you will appoint to your new Canadian Ministry an appropriate number of Members of Parliament that are of Ukrainian descent.”

UCC’s soon to be established Policy and Research Centre in Ottawa will be working with the new government and all Members of Parliament to continue building upon the commitments made to our community during this recent election campaign (see UCC 2008 Election survey at www.ucc.ca) for the benefit all Canadians.
