Since its Congress in February 2008, the Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK) has been working hard to coordinate efforts and develop resources to assist clubs in their efforts. We are happy to announce the creation or revival of several new Ukrainian student organizations across Canada, bringing the official club count to fourteen.
This year the Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union coordinated two projects to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor. Eleven student clubs across Canada participated in one or both of the events.
The first event was SUSK’s 33 Hour Famine, during which participants fasted for 33 hours to raise awareness about the Holodomor. Clubs were also encouraged to fundraise during this campaign in order to support local Holodomor education initiatives and the production of a new Holodomor documentary, “Genocide Revealed”.
Clubs also participated in an international simultaneous display of the exhibit Holodomor: Genocide by Famine, coordinated by SUSK and League of Ukrainian Canadians. The clubs have the option of donating this exhibit to their university to be used as a resource for anyone choosing to research the Holodomor.
SUSK is also organizing the 51st SUSK Congress, which will take place in Toronto February 20-22, 2009. The Congress will bring together students from all across the country to network, socialize, meet community leaders, and participate in meaningful discussions and panels designed to become more knowledgeable in certain issues and generate solutions to common problems.
SUSK is also accepting submissions for its trilingual newsletter Student, which reaches youth across Canada. We ask that interested persons send their submissions (experiences, articles, pictures, artwork, poetry, letters, etc.) to student@susk.ca.
We invite interested participants and sponsors to contact us at info@susk.ca or visit our website at www.susk.ca.
