John Nowosad – Вічна Йому пам’ять

Winnipeg, Manitoba – It is with great sorrow that the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) advises of the passing of former UCC National President, Mr. John Nowosad at the age of 93.

“On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and all its constituent member organizations I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. John Nowosad,” stated Paul Grod, UCC National President. “Mr. Nowosad will be remembered as a great Ukrainian Canadian who loved Canada and his Ukrainian heritage. He served his community honourably and defended the civil liberties of its members. As a former President of UCC National he had many accomplished among which included the creation of the UCC’s Civil Liberties Commission. In so doing he will always be remembered for appreciating the need for such a commission that successfully defended Canada’s Ukrainians against the specious allegations then being made about alleged “war criminals” hiding in our midst and articulating the community’s position about how any war criminals who might be found in Canada should be brought to justice. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress remains a vibrant and important organization representing and coordinating a very dynamic community thanks to the efforts of Mr. Nowosad and those like him. May His Memory Be Eternal – Vichnaya Yomu Pamyat’”

John Nowosad was elected in 1980 and re-elected in 1983 as National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. John participated in two world congresses of Ukrainians in New York and Toronto, was a guest speaker at various conferences across Canada and attended numerous Ukrainian festivals. He was awarded the Shevchenko Medal by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in 1977 and received the Plaque of Appreciation from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in 1988.
