March 9th - Ukrainian Literature Day

Winnipeg- February 27, 2009 - Canadians across the country are encouraged to support Ukrainian Literature Day on March 9th, 2009 by making use of the public library system and checking out one of the hundreds of books on Ukrainian themes.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) together with the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation and the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko have launched this national campaign to raise awareness about Ukrainian literature among Canadians.

"The purpose of this new day of celebration is to raise awareness among the general public that Ukrainian literature is a vibrant, growing genre with much to offer to every segment of society," stated Paul Grod, UCC's National President. "Ukrainian Literature Day also seeks to showcase some award-winning authors and books as well as to connect young Canadians with Ukrainian literature."

Under the slogan "Read, Learn, Study, My Brothers", Ukrainian Literature Day coincides with the 195th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko's birthday. The slogan is adapted from a phrase in one of Shevchenko's well known works.

About Taras Shevchenko:
Taras Shevchenko has a unique place in Ukrainian cultural history and in world literature. His writings formed the foundation for the modern Ukrainian literature to a degree that he is also considered by many the founder of the modern written Ukrainian language. Shevchenko's poetry contributed greatly to the growth of Ukrainian national consciousness, and his influence on various facets of Ukrainian intellectual, literary, and national life is still felt to this day.

Check out your book from the library on March 9th!
