Winnipeg, Manitoba - September 25, 2009 - The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) was pleased to learn this week that The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, has begun talks between Canada and Ukraine on a free trade agreement (FTA).

Minister Day with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko
UCC President Paul Grod commented on this historic development for both countries saying, "This initiative of Free Trade Agreement discussions between Canada and Ukraine has been a long time in coming. We believe there are significant opportunities to open doors for businesses in both countries."
Canada's Minister Day made the announcement with Ukraine's Minister of Economics, Bohdan Danylyshyn, after a series of meetings and negotiations with the Ministry of Economics of Ukraine. Both countries have agreed to meet in the coming months to discuss numerous trade and investment issues to facilitate economic relations and fight protectionism.
"Free trade negotiations will add to the strength of Canada's commitment and partnership with Ukraine," stated Mr. Grod. "UCC plans to work closely with the Canadian federal government to ensure that our community's perspective is heard and reflected during negotiations."
