Winnipeg, Canada - January 12, 2010 - Mr. Lew Babij, President of the Brotherhood of Veterans 1st Division UNA passed away on January 9th in Toronto at the age of 83.
"On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and all its constituent member organizations, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr. Lew Babij," stated Paul Grod, UCC National President. "Mr. Babij will be remembered as a hero of Ukraine who fought during WWII for her independence as well as a great Ukrainian Canadian who loved Canada, his Ukrainian heritage and his family and friends."
For his tireless work, Mr Babij was awarded the Taras Shevchenko Medal, the highest award of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. He honourably served Ukraine and his adopted homeland Canada as well as its Ukrainian Canadian community. He was actively involved in both the plight of his community and the development of his children and grandchildren.
There are no words for the pain from the loss of this truly caring person.
We ask God to remember Mr. Babij's family during this difficult time, and to grant Mr. Lew Babij eternal life in His Heavenly home.

З великим сумом повідомляємо, що 9-го січня на 83-му році життя відійшов у вічність Левко Бабій. Конґрес Українців Канади висловлює глибокі співчуття родині та приятелям пана Левка Бабія.
Пана Бабія будуть пам'ятати як справжнього героя України який боровся за її незалежність, і також як великого українського канадця, який любив Канаду та українську спадщину. До самого кінця пан Левко Бабій був головою Крайової Управи Братства колишніх Вояків 1-ої Української Дивізії Української Національної Aрмії.За його невтомну працю пана Бабія було нагороджено медаллю Тараса Шевченка, найвищою відзнакою Конґресу Українців Канади. Він з честю служив своїй громаді і брав активну участь у її розвитку. Не передати словами біль від втрати цієї відкритої серцем людини.
Молимо Всевишнього, щоб допоміг родині панa Бабія перенести цю велику трагедію, а достойному п.Бабію дарував життя вічне в Його небесній оселі.
