Winnipeg, Canada – The Ukrainian Canadian Congress asks you to support to the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) during its annual May Campaign.
“The work of the World Congress is critical today more than ever,” state Paul Grod, UCC National President. “I am very proud of the work being done by the World Congress and its President Eugene Czolij. I encourage Ukrainian Canadians to generously give to the UWC’s fundraising drive. We are an active member of UWC and I believe it serves a critical role in supporting Ukrainian communities around the world. The World Congress is the channel by which our interests and concerns are represented to the government of Ukraine.”
As the international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora, UWC continually and diligently defends the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians while uniting member organizations in over 30 countries. UWC’s success over 43 years is a result of the dedicated and conscientious work of its leadership and member organizations, as well as the financial support of generous donors, most notably, Ukrainian credit unions in Canada and the USA.
In the past year, UWC successfully fulfilled its objectives and plans to implement UWC’s vision statement adopted in March 2009 on important issues for Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora, which formed the basis of four Memorandums of Understanding signed in 2009-2010:
- Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on issues which include guaranteeing the rights of Ukrainians living outside Ukraine, promoting the image of Ukraine internationally, preserving and popularizing the Ukrainian language in the diaspora and Ukraine, recognizing the Ukrainian Holodomor of 1932-33 as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people, and supporting Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic goals;
- Memorandum of Understanding with Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism on cultural and arts issues;
- Memorandum of Understanding with Ukraine’s Ministry of Family, Youth and Sport on sports issues;
- Memorandum of Understanding between UWC’s Sport Commission and Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee regarding the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
Guided by our motto for 2010 – Strengthening the national awareness of Ukrainians around the world! – which is driven by the recognition of today’s needs, UWC will continue to fulfill its leadership role in coordinating the activities of the many millions of people in the Ukrainian diaspora, primarily through far-reaching international projects similar to the International Holodomor Remembrance Flame. UWC will also continue to develop Ukrainian community life in the diaspora and protect the human rights and national interests of all Ukrainians. UWC’s activities will focus on strengthening Ukraine’s independence, securing the status of Ukrainian as the only state language in Ukraine, asserting Ukraine’s identity, and continuing the process of democratization in Ukraine and its integration into the European community.
