Hnat Khotkevych V International Ukrainian Folk Instruments Contest
The Fifth Hnat Khotkevych International Contest of Performers on Ukrainian Folk Instruments will take place on 4-14 November in Kharkiv.
The Competition was founded in 1997 by Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Kharkiv City Council, I. P. Kotliarevsky Kharkiv State University of Arts, the Hnat Khotkevych Foundation for National and Cultural initiatives with support from the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Tourism and dedicated to the memory of the prominent Ukrainian cultural figure, composer, performer-bandura-player, teacher, writer, dramatist, actor, stage-director, folklorist and civic activist Hnat Martynovych Khotkevych. The Contest is held every 3 years in Kharkiv, where the prominent artist was born in 1877 and was innocently executed by shooting in 1938.
It is known that apart bandura, Hnat Khotkevych studied and actively propagated all Ukrainian folk instruments and on the basis of his own research published a monograph entitled “Musical instruments of the Ukrainian People”.
For this reason, not limiting the contest to just the bandura and not restricting the creative heritage of the prominent artist, the founders of the contest aim to assist development and encouragement of performing on different Ukrainian folk instruments, discovering new names of artists and support talented young performers, primarily in Slobozhan region, where Hnat Khotkevych was born and raised.
The International Hnat Khotkevych Contest of Performers on Ukrainian Folk Instruments is considered to be the visiting-card of the Kharkiv region helping to increase the cultural rating and international authority of this region in the world. Due to the high level of professional organization, the Hnat Khotkevych International Contest has grown to become a prestige event, bringing attention to itself from the public in Ukraine and from abroad. The high level of professionalism is displayed at the contest and is provided by an authoritative team of adjudicators, including leading specialists of the Contest’s specializations and genres. Unfortunately, this year for the first time the Contest will take place without its founder, the daughter of Hnat Khotkevych, Halyna Khotkevych, who passed away this year at the end of February in France. Like her great father, Halyna Khotkevych devoted all her efforts, energy and ideas to the development and preservation of Ukrainian musical culture in the world and was one of initiators of the International Hnat Khotkevych Ukrainian Folk Intruments Competition in Kharkiv.
Large numbers of participants of the Contest (over 100 persons) bear witness to the need for such an event, that regardless of the difficult socio-economic situation in Ukraine, is a outcome of the natural aspiration for true values of the musical culture, and provides us with hope and a positive outlook for the future.
The V International Hnat Khotkevych Contest of Performers on Ukrainian Folk Instruments will become one of the important state events of 2010, confirming at an international level the highest achievements in contemporary music performance, popularized in the multinational society that exists within the Ukrainian musical fabric.
Kost Petrovych Cheremsky, the director of The V International Hnat Khotkevych Contest of Performers on Ukrainian Folk Instruments, Merited worker of Culture.
