Statement by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff on the Commemoration of
Holomodor
OTTAWA – Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement to
commemorate the Holomodor:
“The Holomodor, which literally means ‘murder by starvation,’ is the darkest
chapter in the long history of the Ukrainian people. Stalin’s Soviet Union
systematically put millions of Ukrainians to a slow death by famine, wiping
out a quarter of the rural population and destroying the intellectual,
cultural and religious heritage of a generation through mass arrests,
deportations and firing squads.
“The Holomodor, which set back Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and
independence for a decade, was an act of genocide that must never be
forgotten. On behalf of the Liberal party of Canada and our parliamentary
caucus, I encourage all Canadians to commemorate the Holomodor by learning
more about this tragedy, remembering its victims, and recognizing a
responsibility to protect others from suffering a similar fate.”
