WARAWA HEADS CANADA-UKRAINE PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP
December 10, 2008
December 10, 2008, Ottawa, ON: Last week, Mark Warawa, Member of Parliament for Langley, was elected Chair of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group. The Parliamentary Friendship Group held its Annual General Meeting to elect its Executive Committee. The aim of the group is to provide a structure for the exchange of visits, information and ideas between Canadian parliamentarians and prominent representatives from Ukraine.
“I am very honoured to represent Canada and Ukrainian Canadians as the Chair of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group,” said MP Mark Warawa. “In the upcoming year, I look forward to working as Chair to building on the cultural, social and economic ties that exist between Canada and Ukraine.”
MP Mark Warawa has served on the Executive Committee of the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group since 2007. During this time, the Group has witnessed many historic and monumental events take place here in Canada and Ukraine surrounding the 75th Anniversary of Holodomor. With the Royal Assent of Bill C-459, the international community witnessed Canada officially recognize the Holodomor as a genocide. The Group was also honoured with a visit by the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko. Another significant event highlighting the tragedy of the Holodomor was the national tour of the International Remembrance Flame which traveled to 17 Canadian cities.
Throughout these events, the Canada – Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group has worked closely with the Ukrainian Ambassador and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress to remember one of the most horrific crimes of the last century. It is my hope that the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group remains non-partisan as it work towards strengthening and enhancing Canada-Ukraine relations.
Canada, with over 1,100,000 Canadians of Ukrainian descent, has a longstanding and special relationship with Ukraine, which is enhanced through Parliamentary Friendship Group activities.
