“Economic Integration of Immigrants: Diversity, Opportunities and Challenges”
A one-day symposium organized by the Calgary Multicultural Centre,
in partnership with the University of Calgary.
May 12, 2011
8:30 am to 3:30 pm
University of Calgary, Downtown Campus, 906 – 8th Ave. SW
As Canada’s cultural diversity has increased, so has the need to acknowledge our nation’s changing character. While policy shifts emphasize how skilled immigrants enhance Canada’s overall growth and development, there are still serious gaps in the integration of professional immigrants into the Canadian workforce. To increase public awareness of this important issue, the Calgary Multicultural Centre (CMC) is hosting a one-day symposium entitled, “Economic Integration of Immigrants: Diversity, Opportunities and Challenges”
From 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on May 12, 2011, this event will engage the Calgary community in a dialogue about the benefits of multiculturalism in the workplace and the challenges that new Canadians face as they integrate into our local workforce.
Keynote Speakers:
Dr. Abdie Kazemipur, University of Lethbridge
Lynn Roger, Senior Vice-President, BMO Financial Group
Fariborz Birjandian, CCIS Executive Director
Through panel discussion and short testimonials from recently immigrated professionals, symposium attendees will review challenges that professional immigrants experience when trying to secure employment in Canada, and explore the topic of workplace diversity.
As a result of the symposium, we aim to encourage employers to improve recruitment practices and develop training policy that is more inclusive and culturally sensitive. Furthermore, we will focus the attention of policy makers to undertake effective strategies and indicators to measure immigrant integration.
