Opening ceremony of a Photographic Essay “Chornobyl: 25 Years Later”
by Olena Serbyn Sullivan at the Ukrainian Embassy
On April 12, 2011 a Photographic Essay “Chornobyl: 25 Years Later” by Olena Serbyn Sullivan (http://www.photolena.ca) on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Chornobyl nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine was opened at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada. A number of foreign diplomats and representatives of the Ukrainian community visited the opening ceremony.
In his greeting remarks H.E. Dr. Ihor Ostash, Ambassador of Ukraine in Canada, underlined that Chornobyl catastrophe proved and disaster in Japan confirmed that heavy nuclear accidents cause global consequences and influence vital interests of many countries and resources, necessary to overcome consequences of technogenic catastrophes of such scope go far beyond economic and technological capabilities of individual country and require joint efforts of world community. Ihor Ostash stressed that for now there is a lack in funding for the Chornobyl projects amounting 740 million euros. The Ukrainian Ambassador informed that Ukraine is going to hold several events this spring dedicated to the 25-th Anniversary of the Chornobyl catastrophe, among them: Chernobyl Pledging Conference (Chernobyl Shelter Fund (CSF) and Nuclear Safety Account (NSA)) on April 19, 2011; Nuclear Safety Summit on April 19, 2011; International Conference “Twenty-five Years after Chornobyl Accident: Safety for the Future” on 20-22 of April, 2011.
The photo exhibit featured 13 artworks of Toronto-based visual artist Olena Serbyn-Sullivan, who in 2009 traveled to irradiated landscape of Chornobyl’s Exclusive Zone and the ghost city of Prypyat to explore the effects of the nuclear disaster through photography. The display of the exhibit was supported by the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund.
The attention of the guests of the ceremony was also drawn to the painting by Bohdan Vandiak (http://www.vandiakphotography.com) named “Subconscious” which was displayed at the Embassy. This painting dated 1996 and created on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Chornobyl catastrophe, was titled “Subconscious” because the invisible threat from this epic disaster is like a nightmare that is constantly replayed in your mind.
After the official program a short documentary film “Chornobyl: Two Colors of Time” with the original footage of the Chornobyl nuclear station after the catastrophe was screened at the Embassy.

at the opening ceremony of a Photographic Essay “Chornobyl: 25 Years Later”
on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Chornobyl nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine

Your Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We gathered here today to look back in time and recall in our memory one of the biggest anthropogenic catastrophe in the history of mankind.
Twenty five years ago on April 26 terrible accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant took place.
The catastrophe resulted in contamination of more than 145 thousands square kilometers of land in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. More than 5 million people were affected, 5 thousands communities were contaminated with radio nuclides.
30-kilometers exclusion zone was created around the plant. More than 116 thousand people were evacuated from the cities of Prypyat and Chornobyl, regional centers and villages of the 30-kilometers zone.
Many fireman, soldiers and experts sacrificed their lives and health to rescue other people from even worse possible sequences of the catastrophe. Within few weeks the accident caused deaths of 30 employees and firemen. During 1986-1987 more then 240 000 people directly participated in the works at the site. In general till the present moment more than 600 000 people were engaged in different time periods.
The Chornobyl disaster had great social and economic impact. Under the estimations of the Ukrainian experts total losses of Ukraine till 2015 will reach 179 billion US dollars. Burden of the Chornobyl disaster consequences was a serious slowdown factor for the economic development of Ukraine. That is why we still need further assistance of the world community.
As for now there is a lack in funding for the Chornobyl projects amounting 740 million euros.
Ukraine is going to hold several events this spring dedicated to the 25-th Anniversary of the Chornobyl catastrophe.

– Chernobyl Pledging Conference (Chernobyl Shelter Fund (CSF) and Nuclear Safety Account (NSA)) on April 19, 2011
– Nuclear Safety Summit on April 19, 2011.
– International Conference “Twenty-five Years after Chornobyl Accident: Safety for the Future” on 20-22 of April, 2011.
These days another country faces terrible tragedy. Destructive natural disaster in Japan caused an accident at Fukushima nuclear plant. For more than a month people at Fukushima NPP are fighting to prevent even worse nuclear catastrophe.
Chornobylcatastrophe proved and disaster in Japan confirmed that heavy nuclear accidents cause global consequences and influence vital interests of many countries. Resources, necessary to overcome consequences of technogenic catastrophes of such scope go far beyond economic and technological capabilities of individual country and require joint efforts of world community.

Виставка фотографій Олени Сербин-Салівен «Чорнобиль: 25 років по тому»
в Посольстві України в Канаді
12 квітня ц.р в Посольстві України в Канаді відбулося відкриття фотовиставки Олени Сербин-Салівен (http://www.photolena.ca) «Чорнобиль: 25 років по тому», на якому були присутні представники дипломатичних кіл та української громади Оттави.
Під час свого виступу Посол України в Канаді Ігор Осташ зазначив, що Чорнобильська катастрофа довела, а пізніше аварія на ядерній електростанції в м.Фукусіма в Японії це підтвердила, що такі трагедії спричинюють глобальні наслідки та впливають на життєві інтереси багатьох країн. І.Осташ при цьому наголосив, що ресурси, які потрібні для подолання наслідків техногенних катастроф такого масштабу, виходять далеко за межі економічних та технологічних можливостей окремої країни та вимагають зусиль усього світового співтовариства. Посол також поінформував присутніх про те, що на даний момент для завершення Чорнобильських проектів Україні не вистачає 740 мільйонів євро. Крім того, І.Осташ повідомив присутніх, що у квітні ц.р. в м.Київ заплановано проведення низки заходів, присвячених 25-й річниці катастрофи на Чорнобильській АЕС, зокрема Міжнародної науково-практичної конференції «25 років Чорнобильської катастрофи. Безпека майбутнього» 20-22 квітня ц.р., Конференції зі збору додаткових коштів на Чорнобильські проекти (т.зв. «Донорської конференції») 19 квітня ц.р. та Зустрічі високого рівня «Київський саміт з питань безпечного та інноваційного використання ядерної енергії» 19 квітня ц.р.
На виставці були представлені 13 фоторобіт канадського фотографа з м.Торонто Олени Сербин-Салівен, яка у 2009 році здійснила подорож до Чорнобильської зони відчуження та міста Прип’ять. Виставка була створена за підтримки Канадського фонду «Дітям Чорнобиля».
До уваги гостей виставки також була представлена картина українсько-канадського художника з м.Торонто Богдана Вандяка (http://www.vandiakphotography.com) під назвою «Підсвідоме», створена у 1996 році та присвячена 10-й річниці Чорнобильської катастрофи.
Крім того, гості Посольства мали можливість переглянути документальний фільм «Чорнобиль: два кольори часу», який містив оригінальні кадри ліквідації наслідків Чорнобильської аварії у перші місяці після катастрофи.
