Interview with Vyacheslav Briukhovetskyi, Honorary President of National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy (Abbreviated)

In the mid-nineties, Jan Brzezinski, the son of Zbigniew Brzezinski, lectured at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in English. When he finished teaching his course he came to me to share his experience, and I asked him what he thinks of our students. He answered, “They are so aggressive, it’s so good!”. At that moment, I, a person from the Soviet era, realized that to be aggressive may even be a good quality, it may have a positive meaning. But eventually I learned that it can mean something else: determination, a sense of purpose, diligence and perseverance in achieving goals – all positive features missing in our society. more…

Electronic Library of Ukraine (ElibUkr) Participates at Library Innovation & E-Governance Fair

A major library innovation & e-governance fair took place in Kyiv at the Ukrainian House on April 11, 2011. The event was organized by the program Bibliomist, funded by the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation and managed by IREX, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Library Association (ULA), the Parliamentary Development Project II, and also with the collaboration of the Public Affairs Section U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. More than 50 Ukrainian libraries, community organizations and projects presented innovative library services that provide application of current library technology.
The ElibUkr project was invited to participate in the fair as an example of one of the most successful library initiatives in Ukraine. The consortium of university libraries began three years ago with 3 libraries and now includes 12 participants with 4 additional applicants at this time. The project was initiated by the Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and supported by USAID and participating universities.more…

Kyiv Mohyla Academy Publishes Translation of “Stalin’s Genocides” by Norman Naimark

At the initiative of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the university’s Publishing House received exclusive rights for the Ukrainian translation and publication of the book “Stalin’s Genocides” by historian and acclaimed author Norman M. Naimark. The original in English was published by Princeton University Press in 2010. The author attended a press conference and the presentation of the Ukrainian translation, which took place in Kyiv at the offices of UNIAN and at the university on May 10-11.

The presentation and press conference included Kyiv-Mohyla Academy president Sehiy Kvit, the author Norman M. Naimark, historian Stanislav Kulchitskyj of the Institute of History of Ukraine, and historian Yuri Shapoval, the editor of the Ukrainian translation of the book “Stalin’s Genocides”. Norman M. Naimark is professor of modern East European history, specializing in genocide and ethnic cleansing, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, and professor of history at Stanford University.more…
