On a Victoria Day enveloped by typically and historically unpredictable Alberta weather, a group of determined, undeterred enthusiasts gathered to officially mark two historic events.As the 2011 Summer Season officially got underway at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV), a provincial Historic Site just east of Edmonton, a seemingly unremarkable, yet historically significant addition was made to the permanent interpretive display of the Village.  This cooperative project between the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Society and the Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association unveiled a replica homestead marker, identical to those planted by the very first Ukrainian settlers in Alberta, some 120 years ago.

Guests at the ceremony included St. Albert MLA Ken Allred.  In attendance also were descendants of Iwan Pylypow, Nykola Tychkowsky and Anton Paish, — the original immigrants from Nebyliv, Galicia, Austro-Hungary, located today in Western Ukraine.  These were the first such settlers to the unbroken lands of East Central Alberta, who endured untold hardships and seemingly insurmountable challenges to put down roots and build lives on the untamed Canadian prairies.  As part of the ceremony, the replica marker was pounded into its permanent place by descendants, community and professional representatives.  A solemn Prayer Service in memory of all pioneer settlers of East-Central Alberta was celebrated by Reverend Fathers of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

The gathering, hosted by Radomir Bilash, Chief Historian of the UCHV,  also served as the official launch of a full year’s celebrations marking the 120^th Anniversary of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada, under the umbrella of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.  Events from banquets to festivals to academic conferences will be held across the country between now and May of 2012.  These will be listed and archived at the UCC website, www.ucc.ca, and will also include the incorporation of social media to get the word out and keep the message current.

In addition, the official 120^th Anniversary logo was unveiled, as the culmination of a country-wide call for proposals that saw upwards of 30 different submissions made by inspired artists, several of whom were from beyond the Ukrainian-Canadian community.  The winning submission is by Toronto-based artist Oleh Lesiuk, and will be immediately made available for general use by the community as it organizes and realizes Anniversary events and projects.

“Let’s mark this milestone with highly-charged enthusiasm and unbridled creativity,” declared Roman Brytan, Chair of the National 120^th Anniversary Commemorative Committee, and echoed by Daria Luciw, National Vice-President and Provincial President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.  “Driven by our official Jubilee Theme KANADA-UKRAINA 120:  GROUNDBREAKERS – NATION-BUILDERS – TRAILBLAZERS,” continued Brytan, “this is the year for highlighting our individual accomplishments, wondering at our infinite community potential and driving towards making this Ukrainian-Canadian milestone one in which all Canadians can take pride and claim as part of our shared, national history.”

В День Королеви Вікторії, під час типово й історично непередбачуваної погоди в Альберті, зібралася група відданих ентузіастів щоб офіційно відзначити дві історичні події.Із початком літнього сезону 2011 р. в Селі Спадщини Української Культури (ССУК), провінційна історико-культурна пам’ятка на схід від Едмонтону, було зроблене на перший погляд скромне, але історично важливе додавання до об’єктів інтерпретаційної виставки Села. Цей спільний проект Генеалогічного Проекту Альберта-Україна (Alberta–UkraineGenealogicalProject) та  Альбертської Асоціації  Землемірів (Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association) відкрили репліку маркувального стовпа землемірів, ідентичного тому, який встановлювали землеміри та який шукали перші поселенці при взятті землі в наділ у Альберті майже 120 років тому.

Гості церемонії включали депутата виборчого округу м. Сейнт Альберт, Кена Аллреда. Серед присутніх також були нащадки Івана Пилипова, Николи Тичковського й Антона Паіша – перших мігрантів із с. Небилів на Галичині, колись частини Австро-Угорщини, яке тепер розташоване в західній частині України. Перші до ніколи не ораної східно-центральної Альберти, ці поселенці терпіли невимовні тяжкості й здавалось нестерпимі виклики для того, щоб “пустити коріння” й будувати життя в диких преріях Канади. Частиною церемонії стало встановлення земельного стовпа нащадками перших поселенців, а також представниками громади та громадськими діячами. Також на спомин про всіх першопоселенців до східно-центральної Альберти була відслужена панахида священниками Української Греко-Католицької Церкви та Української Православної Церкви Канади.

Подія була очолювана Радомиром Білашем, старшим істориком-краєзнавцем ССУК й керівником-манажером Генеалогічного Проекту Альберта-Україна. Церемонія також слугувала початком офіційного року відзначення 120-ої річниці українських поселень в Канаді під патронатом Конґресу Українців Канади (КУК). Різноманітні події, включаючи бенкети фестивалі й наукові конференції, заплановані починаючи від сьогодні й до травня 2012 р. Ці події мають з’явитися на офіційному сайті КУКу, www.ucc.ca. Між іншим, до подій планується залучити медіа в тому числі з метою розповсюдження інформації про заплановані події.

Крім того, було представлено офіційний логотип до святкування 120-ої річниці –   наслідок конкурсу, що відбувся по всій країні, який зібрав більше ніж 30 подань натхненних митців; декілька з них були з-поза українсько-канадської громади. Номінантом-переможцем став художник з Торонто, Олег Лесюк. Логотип доступний для загального вжитку громади при вшануванні 120-ої річниці поселень.

“Відзначаймо цей етап із запальним ентузіазмом і нестримною креативністю”, заявив Роман Британ, голова комітету святкування 120-ої річниці й почув відгук Дарії Луців, загальнонаціонального віце-президента Конґресу Українців Канади. “В  контексті нашої офіційної ювілейної теми КАНАДА-УКРАЇНА 120: ПЕРШОПРОХОДЦІ – БУДІВНИЧІ НАЦІЇ – НОВАТОРИ,” – продовжив Британ, “цей рік – рік для відзначення наших особистих досягнень, уваги до нашого невимірного потенціалу нашої громади та її прямування до перетворення цього українсько-канадського історичне надбання за яке всі канадці були б горді й визнавали б його за спільну загальноканадську історію”.

Le Congrès des ukrainien canadiens lance le 120ème anniversairede l’établissement des Ukrainiens au Canada

Cette année, la fête de la Reine Victoria s’est déroulé en Alberta enveloppé par des conditions météorologiques imprévisibles, un groupe enthousiaste de la communauté ukrainienne se sont réunis pour marquer officiellement deux événements historiques sans se laisser décourager par la météo.

La saison estivale 2011 a officiellement débuté à l’Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV), une site provinciale historique à l’est d’Edmonton, d’une apparence banale, mais historiquement plus significatifs ont été réalisés à l’exposition permanente d’interprétation du village. Ce projet coopérative entre la société généalogique de l’Alberta et l’Ukraine et de l’association Land Surveyors’ d’Alberta a dévoilé un marqueur ferme réplique, identiques à ceux plantés par les premiers pionniers ukrainiens en Alberta, quelque 120 ans auparavant.

Les invités à la cérémonie inclus, le député de St. Albert M. Ken Allred. Aussi présent étaient les descendants d’Iwan Pylypow, Nykola Tychkowsky et Anton Paish, – les immigrants d’origine de Nebyliv, en Galicie, l’Autriche-Hongrie, situé aujourd’hui en Ukraine occidentale. Ce furent les premiers pionniers sur les terres telles ininterrompue du Centre-Est de l’Alberta, qui ont enduré des difficultés indicibles et des défis apparemment insurmontables de s’enraciner sur le territoire et de se construire une nouvelle vie dans les prairies sauvages du Canada. Dans le cadre de la cérémonie, le marqueur réplique a été enfoncé dans sa place permanente par les descendants, ainsi que par les représentants de la communauté et les professionnels. Un service de prière solennelle à la mémoire de tous les pionniers du Centre-Est de l’Alberta a été célébrée par Révérends Pères de l’Église ukrainienne catholique et L’Église orthodoxe ukrainienne du Canada.
Le rassemblement, organisé par M. Radomir Bilash, historien en chef de l’UCHV, a également été le lancement officiel des célébrations de l’année marquant le 120ème anniversaire du peuplement pionnier des ukrainiens au Canada, sous l’égide du Congrès des Ukrainiens canadiens. Des évènements comme des banquets, des festivals et des conférences universitaires aura lieu partout au pays dans l’année qui suivra jusqu’en mai 2012. Ceux-ci seront disponibles et archivés sur le site web du Congres des ukrainiens canadiens au: www.ucc.ca, et comprendra également l’intégration des médias sociaux pour transmettre les messages actuels.

En outre, le logo officiel du 120e anniversaire a été dévoilé, comme l’aboutissement d’un appel à l’échelle nationale pour les propositions qui ont vu plus de 30 présentations différentes faites par des artistes inspirés, dont plusieurs ont été au-delà de la communauté ukraino-canadienne. La soumission gagnante est celle de l’artiste de Toronto M. Oleh Lesiuk, et sera immédiatement mis à disposition pour usage général par la communauté car il organise et réalise des événements et des projets reliés à l’anniversaire.

“Marquons cette étape avec un enthousiasme très chargé et la créativité débridée», a déclaré M. Roman Brytan, président du comité commémoratif nationale sur le120ème anniversaire, et repris par Mme Daria Luciw, vice-président national et président provincial du Congrès ukrainien canadien. “Poussés par notre thème officielle “KANADA-UKRAINA 120: pionnières – bâtisseurs de la nation – colons», a poursuivi Brytan, «c’est l’année pour mettre en évidence nos réalisations individuelles, en se demandant à notre potentiel infini et de conduire la communauté à faire de cette étape ukraino-canadienne celui dans lequel tous les Canadiens peuvent être fiers et de réclamer dans le cadre de notre l’histoire nationale commune. ”
