Cheremosh Blogging from the Black Sea

Edmonton’s internationally acclaimed Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company is in Nessebar, Bulgaria participating in the European Championship of Folklore.  The festival runs from July 8 – 18, 2011 and will be broadcast on 50 cable outlets in Bulgaria and live via the internet to the rest of the world.

In addition to the live internet broadcasts, Cheremosh dancers will add their own social media perspective to the event by blogging from the festival. Dance enthusiasts are invited to check out the blog at:http://www.cheremosh.ca/news/ (it is currently live).

Non bloggers are invited to watch the performances live via the internet at: http://eurofolk.com/tv/ – internet broadcast dates and times of Cheremosh’s performances will be posted on the blog site.

As the only representative from North America, the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company is honoured and proud to represent Canada, Alberta and Edmonton at this international event.

Cheremosh left Edmonton on July 6^th and returns July 19^th.

About the Festival

The European Association of Folklore Festivals (EAFF) was established in 2001 in the ancient capital of Bulgaria – Veliko Tarnovo. Its purpose is to preserve, develop and make popular the folklore of the different European nations by organizing festivals and using the modern television, computer and other information technologies.

The European Association of Folklore Festivals achieves its mandate by hosting the Musical Feasts “Euro Folk” festivals and through the Internet Television site “Euro Folk”.  All the festivals feature the complete filming with professional TV equipment of all the performances together with the creation of different audio and TV products. Of the Musical Feasts “Euro Folk” festivals that have been held so far 4,000 groups with more than 80,000 participants from 17 European countries have taken part. The European Association of Folklore Festivals operates in cooperation with televisions from Bulgaria and Europe, with folklore ensembles, groups, municipalities, community centres, schools and other organizations of cultural activities.  “Euro Folk 2011” is supported by UNSECO.

Malcom Forsyth – Vichnaya Pamyat

Excerpt from the Cheremosh Bulgeria Blog by Cheremosh Dancer, Morgan Demers:

Today is the day that I board a flight, Bulgaria bound. While I can barely contain my excitement, I am also filled with a somber inspiration. Yesterday, a celebrated Canadian composer lost his battle with pancreatic cancer.

Malcom Forsyth composed a medley for Cheremosh’s 40th Anniversary. It features music that was used in dances throughout the company’s 40-year existence with a brilliant finish of Cheremosh’s beloved “Hopak.” It was the perfect contribution to our celebration, reflecting the mosaic community that is the Art of Cheremosh.

As we embark on our European adventure, we can take a note of inspiration from Mr. Forsyth’s dedication to his audience:

“I’m never more happy than when I can be transported by a performer or performance. Everything I’ve done is with that experience in mind: Changing the space that the audience sits in for those brief few moments.” -Malcom Forsyth

I hope that we transported Mr. Forsyth on the night of our milestone celebration and that we continue to move audiences around the world. Rest in peace, Malcom Forsyth. Good luck to all of the Cheremosh dancers in Bulgaria.

  Every summer thousands of people gather for the annual Ukrainian Day Festival held at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. This event has a 35 year history of bringing together families from all across east-central Alberta along with tourists and the general public for a day celebrating all things Ukrainian. From arts, cultural learning and children’s activities to great food, family reunions, unique pioneer experiences and a showcase of Ukrainian performers, Ukrainian Day has something for everyone. This year we will be also commemorating 120 years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada with particular attention to the history of the first Ukrainian settlers in Alberta and the legacy they brought to our province and to Canada. It is also a unique opportunity to show your community spirit and support by showcasing your organization, business or services to a captive audience. The Ukrainian Cheremosh Society welcomes new dancers to our Company and School of Dance.

Auditions:

Chumak I (ages 9-11)-September 8 from 6:00-7:00 pm

Chumak II (ages 12-14)-September 8 from 7:00-8:00 pm

Cheremshyna (ages 14+)-September 9 from 6:00-7:30 pm

Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company (ages 16+ or in Grade 10)-September 9 from 7:30-9:00 pm

Registration for Novice Classes for ages 4-8 will occur the first day of classes September 10

Artistic Director Honoured for 20 Years of Service

On June 2^nd Cheremosh dancers, alumni, society members, board members, former board members, past presidents and supporters gathered at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre to honour Mykola Kanevets 20^th year as the Artistic Director of Cheremosh. The evening was emceed by Cheremosh Alumnus Shawn Owchar. Past-president Ernie Bayrock shared the story of hiring Mykola with past-presidents Darryl Currie, Brenda Hawrysh-Griffiths, Allison Scott and Jason Golinowski touching base on the major productions that have occurred under Mykola’s direction. Also in attendance were Mykola’s family as well as Cheremosh founder, Chester Kuc. It was an evening to show our appreciation for the excellence that Mykola has brought to the Ukrainian Cheremosh Society, and to recognize his superior ability as a choreographer, ballet master and artistic director. His influence is felt right through the School of Dance to the Ukrainian Cheremosh Dance Company. Thank-you Mykola; as was repeated throughout the evening, may we share 20 more years with you!
