This year UCC – Vancouver Branch chose to join Surrey’s Fusion Festival (July 16 & 17) as a fitting opportunity to publicly celebrate 120 years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada, as well as the 21st anniversary of Ukraine’s proclamation of sovereignty.
The Ukrainian pavillion tent included displays of Ukrainian history, Ukrainian settlement in Canada, Ukrainian dance in BC, Ukrainian music and culture. Our own Gladys Andreas demonstrated her skills on a traditional tsymbaly (dulcimer). A pysanka workshop run by Joan and Tom Brander attracted Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike. A display of Ukrainian history attracted the attention of very many visitors. It also played as a Powerpoint presentation via multimedia projector. This was supplemented by photographs of archeological treasures provided by Yuriy Shevchuk. A display of early Ukrainian settlement in Canada in documents and illustrations was prepared by Gladys, Andreas, a great granddaughter of Ivan Halkow who had arrived on the SS Christiana in 1896. Staffing of the pavillion which was organized by Dr. Vitaly Kubatsky, included many young fourth wave immigrants. And finally, not be missed was the Ukrainian kitchen run by Judy Hrynenko and the staff of Langley’s Prairie Cottage Perogies.
Hundreds of visitors who were new to Ukrainian culture came away touched by its magic. The richness and friendliness of our pavillion was recognized by the Festival’s organizers – ours was awarded second place out of the 36 nations represented, as the best dressed (and certainly most informative) pavillion!

Як знаєте, цього року КУК – Ванкувер вирішив святкувати 120 літ українського поселення в Канаді як і 21-ту річницю проголошення суверенности України, при Суррійськім Fusion Festival (16-го та 17-го липня).
Наш павілйон мав вистави української історії, українського поселення в Канаді, українського танцю в Бритійській Колумбії, та української музики й культури. Наша дорога пані Ґладис Андреас демонструвала свою майстерність на цимбалах. Йоання і Том Брандер вели навчання писання писанок. Українська історія була висвітлина як у формі вистави так і прожектором на екрані. Знимки археологічних багацтв України пригорував Юрій Шевчук. Документацію раннього поселення в Канаді виготовила Ґладис Андреас, правнучка Івана Галкова який прибув був у 1896-ім році. Обслугу Павілйону організував пан Д-р. Віталій Кубацький, включивши в проєкт багато молоді із четвертої хвилі еміграції. Ну, і не можна й забути про українську кухню яку організувала пані Джуді Гриненко та обслуга ресторану Prairie Cottage Пироги із міста Ленґлі.
Сотні відвідувачів, необізнані з українською культурою вперше відчули її магію. Багацтво та привітність нашого павільйону визнали організатори заходу, надавши йому другу нагороду, із 36 націй, як найкаще строєний павільйон!
