HOW do teachers teach kids about horrendous events such as the Holodomor, in which Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin engineered a famine that killed millions of Ukrainians in the early 1930s?
Or the internment of Canadians of Ukrainian heritage during the First World War?
Grosvenor School Grade 5 teacher Karen Pellaers is spending the first two weeks of her summer taking day-long classes at the University of Manitoba’s faculty of education to learn how to educate her students in horrible, yet vital, social justice issues.
“We have a big banner on the front of our building. Our school is going through a three-year journey of inquiry about the Canadian Museum for Human Rights,” Pellaers explained. “We’re going into our third year. The assignments are something I can use in the classroom in a kid-friendly way.”
