CIUS Press releases book on Ukrainians in Argentina
October 12, 2011 — Argentina, the eighth-largest country in the world, has relied heavily on immigration to boost its population. In 1914 some 30 percent of the Argentine population was classified as foreign-born. Between the 1890s and 1940s tens of thousands of settlers from Ukraine made their way to that Southern Hemisphere republic. Indeed, Ukrainians constituted the largest of the Slavic groups to immigrate to Argentina and formed significant communities in the provinces of Misiones, Chaco, Mendoza, and Buenos Aires.
Ukrainians in Argentina, 1897–1950: The Making of a Community recounts the immigrant contribution to Ukrainian cultural, political, religious, and other organizations in Argentina. The book is based on research conducted in the archives of both Ukraine and Argentina; it also draws on the immigrant press. The chapters are arranged chronologically, the first dealing with the initial, pre-1914 wave of Ukrainian settlement and the last with the third wave that came after World War II. Two middle chapters are case studies of two organizations founded in the interwar period. The author’s examination of ties developed with Ukrainians in other countries also provides insights into the nature and activity of organizations created in neighbouring Paraguay and Uruguay.
The author of this study, Serge Cipko, is coordinator of the Ukrainian Diaspora Studies Initiative at CIUS. He is the author of St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, Edmonton: A History (1902–2002) and co-author (with Glenna Roberts) of One-Way Ticket: The Soviet Return-to-the-Homeland Campaign, 1955–1960. He is also co-editor (with Natalie Kononenko) of Champions of Philanthropy: Peter and Doris Kule and Their Endowments.

Видавництво КІУСу видало книгу про українців в Арґентині
12 жовтня 2011 — Арґентина, восьма найбільша країна світу, для збільшення населення великою мірою розраховувала наімміґрацію. У 1914 р. близько 30% арґентинського населення складали іноземці. У період 1890-х–1940-х рр. десятки тисячпоселенців з України перебралися до цього краю в південній півкулі. Українці була найбільша слов’янська група імміґрантів в Арґентині, котрі розселилися компактними групами у провінціях Місіонес, Чако, Мендоза й Буенос-Айрес.
«Ukrainians in Argentina, 1897–1950: The Making of a Community» [Українці в Арґентині, 1897–1950: творення громади] розповідає провнесок імміґрантів до українських культурних, політичних, релігійних та інших організацій в Арґентині. Книга базується на дослідженнях, проведених в архівах України й Арґентини, та даних з імміґраційної преси. Розділи укладені за хронологічним порядком, починаючи з першої хвилі української імміґрації до 1914 р. і закінчуючи третьою хвилею, яка прибула після Другої світової війни. Два серединні розділи присвячені студіям про дві організації, засновані у міжвоєнний період. Через огляд зв’язків із українцями в інших країнах, книга також торкається діяльности організацій, створених у сусідніх Параґваї та Уруґваї.
Автор праці, Сергій Ціпко, є координатором Ініціятиви з українських діяспорних студій КІУСу. Він автор книги «Українська католицька катедра св. Йосафата, Едмонтон: історія (1902–2002)» та співавтор (із Ґленною Робертс) «One-Way Ticket: The Soviet Return-to-the-Homeland Campaign, 1955–1960» [Квиток в одну сторону: радянська кампанія за повернення на батьківщину, 1955–1960].
