Dancing onstage in Victoria Park over the weekend, Marco Zwarych is overcome with emotion. You can see it in his face as he bounces across the platform with his fellow dancers in tow.
His features change as quickly as the steps he is performing. His look of stony concentration suddenly breaks down, revealing a smile that spans from ear to ear.
For Zwarych, 19, and scores of other Ukrainian Canadians who have come out to celebrate their heritage, dancing has always been a part of life.
“It’s the best way to carry on the tradition,” Zwarych explains backstage. “Ukrainian dance is a story. Your emotions and heart are always in it.”
