BROTHERHOOD CONCERT SERIES
The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus and Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus announce joint concerts in September
Toronto – The Detroit-based Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus (UBC), under the direction of Oleh Mahlay, and the Winnipeg-based Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus (Hoosli), under the direction of William Solomon, announce the “Brotherhood Concert Series,” a two-concert production uniting two unique ensembles for the first time under the spirit of brotherhood. The UBC and Hoosli will present the sounds of Ukrainian male choral music, and the bandura, the 60 stringed national instrument of Ukraine, in St. Catharines, Ontario on Friday, September 21 at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria and in Toronto, Ontario on Saturday, September 22 at the Ryerson Theatre. The “Brotherhood Concert Series” is sponsored, in part, by the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko and Ukrainian Credit Union Limited (UCU).
This collaborative effort will bring together ensembles from both sides of the Canadian-American border, who share a common passion for Ukrainian choral music, specifically the majestic sound of four-part male harmony. Both ensembles will be presenting their own program then uniting at the end of the concert for the grand finale. Drawing inspiration from their ancestral homeland, the men in these groups invoke the spirit and legacy of the kobzari and kozaky with every performance. It is in honor of those very legends of Ukrainian culture that Brotherhood was chosen as such a fitting title for these concerts.
The repertoires of both groups cover an incredible breadth of Ukrainian music, and include compositions and arrangements from an illustrious list of the most renowned musical talents of Ukraine and North America. Featuring works by names like Bortniansky, Lysenko, and Kytasty, and especially the poignant lyrics of Taras Shevchenko, the combined music libraries of UBC and Hoosli are a boldly expressive history of Ukrainian culture, preserved through song.
