UKRAINIAN CANADIAN CONGRESS MARKS MULTICULTURALISM DAY
OTTAWA – June 27, 2013 – Today the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) issued the following statement from its president, Mr. Paul Grod to mark Canadian Multiculturalism Day:
“On behalf of Canada’s 1.25 million Ukrainian Canadians, I am pleased to wish all Canadians a happy Multiculturalism Day.
One of Canada’s defining principles is our respect for diversity, tolerance and indeed our support for multiculturalism. Ukrainians in Canada helped to open up the west, and have been a founding people of Canada for almost 125 years. We have worked to develop Canadian policy in areas such as human rights protection and multiculturalism, among others. Ukrainian Canadians led the charge in supporting the adoption of Canada’s policy of multiculturalism by the federal government over forty years ago. Canada is stronger because of our multicultural policy and the work of the Ukrainian Community Development Committee.
Through our community’s efforts, the concept of multiculturalism was enshrined and now celebrates our unity as Canadians while respecting our diverse cultures and traditions.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Provincial Councils, Branches and the Member Organizations of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, I am pleased to proclaim our continued support for multiculturalism which make our country a model for the world.”
