TEXT VERSION:
TORONTO – January 27, 2014. The Central and Eastern European Council of Canada,
representing the interests of 4 million Canadians of Eastern and Central European heritage,
condemns the escalated use of brutal violent force by the Yanukovych regime against protesters
in Kiev and which has resulted in at least 3 fatalities.
The CEEC is concerned about the destabilizing effect that such violence will have on the
Central and Eastern European region as a whole.
The CEEC calls on the Government of Canada to take immediate action to hold the Yanukovych
regime accountable for its extreme use of violence by adopting Magnitsky legislation that will
revoke visas and freeze the assets of those individuals who engage in corruption and the abuse
of human rights in Ukraine and Russia.
The CEEC Is calling on all members of the Central and Eastern European communities in
Canada to contact the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister John Baird and their Members of
Parliament to demand action by Canada to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine.
