MP Joy Smith Speaks Out on Behalf of Ukrainian MP Nadiya Savchenko
January 26, 2015 – Ottawa, ON
Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan—St. Paul, released the following statement in support of Ukrainian Member of Parliament Nadiya Savchenko.
“Today is the international day in support of Ukrainian MP Nadiya Savchenko, who has been illegally imprisoned by Russia since June 2014 when she was abducted by pro-Russian militants in the Luhansk region of Ukraine.”
“I join the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations, Ukrainian World Congress, the European Parliament and Amnesty International in calling for the immediate release of MP Nadiya Savchenko.”
“I am particularly outraged that Russia is illegally detaining a duly elected Member of Ukraine’s Parliament. Her continued detention and mistreatment by the Russian Federation is an egregious affront to democracy and human rights.”
“The Government of Canada will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, actively supporting its right to sovereignty and maintaining its territorial integrity.”
