MPP Baker Calls on Federal Government to Supply Defensive Weapons to Ukraine
For immediate release
March 16, 2015. On March 11, 2015 MPP Yvan Baker (Etobicoke Centre), rose at Queen’s Park and called on the Government of Canada to “provide Ukraine with defensive weapons, equipment and training it needs to defend its territorial integrity”.
Mr. Baker stated, “Today, Ukraine is at war and the situation is dire. Russian-backed forces have occupied part of Eastern Ukraine and continue to advance. The soldiers I met are fighting against state-of-the-art equipment with outdated weapons, some from World War II.”
Mr. Baker also called on the Federal Government to dramatically increase sectoral sanctions against Russia, increase the provisions of communications and intelligence capabilities.
“This is important. Not only because Ukraine’s people stand little chance without our help. Not only because there is a humanitarian crisis and civilians need our help. But because the war in Ukraine is a threat to Europe, to global security, to our security and to the values that Canadians hold so dear,” continued Baker.
On February 21, the UCC called for these same provisions. “We are urging the Federal Government to lead the Western World and take a strong stand against Russia’s deadly invasion into Ukraine; and provide Ukraine with the means to defend itself.”
The UCC strongly applauds MPP Baker for his support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We are grateful for the active role MPP Baker has taken.
