Ukraine to Open Consulate in Edmonton
September 29, 2017. OTTAWA. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) welcomes the announcement by His Excellency Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine, that Ukraine will open a Consulate in Edmonton, Alberta. President Poroshenko made the announcement during his working visit to Canada on September 22.
Speaking to the press following his meeting with the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, President Poroshenko stated, “We have also discussed further strengthening our people-to-people contacts. In particular, we agreed to open Ukraine’s Consulate General in Edmonton.”
Currently, Ukrainian consular services in western Canada are provided through temporary visits by consular officials. A permanent, full Consulate in Edmonton will serve to meet growing demand for these important services.
“This is a very important and very welcome step for the Ukrainian community in Alberta and all of Canada. The opening of a Ukrainian Consulate in Edmonton will greatly improve access to services for Ukrainian citizens residing in western Canada. The new Consulate will also facilitate and enhance the development of cultural, social, economic and trade linkages between Canada and Ukraine,” stated Olesia Luciw-Andryjowycz, UCC Alberta Provincial Council President. “We are very pleased that Ukraine’s new Consulate will be opened in the province where Ukrainians first settled in Canada over 125 years ago!”
