UCC statement on attack in Toronto
July 23, 2018. OTTAWA. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) strongly condemns the disgraceful attack perpetrated last night against the people of Toronto. We extend our deep condolences to those who lost family and friends and hope for a speedy recovery for those injured. May the Memory of the Victims Be Eternal. Вічная Пам’ять.
Two people were killed and twelve were injured when a man opened fire on Danforth Avenue in Toronto’s east end yesterday evening.
“This was an appalling and sickening attack against Torontonians. The Ukrainian Canadian community joins all Canadians in remembrance of those who lost their lives and hopes for a speedy recovery for the injured victims,” stated Paul Grod, National President of the UCC. “We express our gratitude for the actions of the Toronto Police Department and all first responders, who reacted swiftly to help the victims of this senseless act of violence.”
Toronto is an open, welcoming and diverse city. It is home to the largest Ukrainian community in Canada. “The Ukrainian community of Toronto mourns those who were killed yesterday in this terrible attack on our city,” stated Taras Bahriy, President of the UCC Toronto branch. “We pray for a fast recovery for the injured victims. Torontonians will never be intimidated by cowards who seek to harm our great city.”
