UCC statement on attack in Kerch, Russian-occupied Crimea
October 17, 2018. OTTAWA. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is profoundly shocked by the news of an attack on a college in Kerch, in Russian-occupied Crimea. According to unconfirmed reports, 19 people were killed and over 30 injured when a student in the college detonated an explosive and opened fire in the college.
“The UCC extends its condolences to all those who lost loved ones and friends in this terrible attack,” stated Paul Grod, National President of the UCC. “These are Ukrainian citizens, living on sovereign Ukrainian territory. They are forced to live under a regime of occupation and are subject to callous and brutal violations of their human rights. The Russian occupation authorities are neither able nor willing to guarantee their safety.”
Ukraine’s Prosecutors Office for the Autonomous Republic of Crimea has opened an investigation into the attack.
