Anna Bodnar has just completed her 4-month Parliamentary Internship in the office of MP Peter Fonseca. Anna worked in Ottawa on policy research, communications, legislative affairs and constituency work. She shared her experience with us in the report below.
Reflecting upon the duration of my UCC Parliamentary Internship, I look back on my immense growth in the political field. During my internship, I was working for the Member of Parliament — Peter Fonseca (Mississauga East-Cooksville). In particular, I was helping with the research done on the Foreign Affairs Committee and participating in virtual caucus committee meetings.
Given the global situation due to COVID-19, Parliamentary work has had to adapt to the evolving health guidelines to ensure the safety of Parliamentarians and staff. Due to the circumstances, my work was adapted so that I could continue working remotely. As most committee work has been paused, my duties were directed to constituency work for Mr. Fonseca’s riding. As COVID has caused much uncertainty in people’s lives, our office has been working closely with constituents to bring home those who were stranded in foreign countries, aid with CERB and CECRA benefits, and work closely with constituents to address immigration and citizenship issues during these times.
Although my internship has had to be altered, I have nonetheless learnt a great deal about the workings of our government. I was able to witness crucial decision-making of the Canadian government as reports of the pandemic were coming to light, especially with regards to our Canadian borders and Public Health.
All in all, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the inner workings of decision-making at the federal level and plan to continue working on the Hill. I know the skills of communication, problem-solving, and teamwork that I have acquired in my brief introduction to politics are invaluable and will continue to play an important role in my career.
