June 21, 2022. OTTAWA, ON. Today marks National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. This day honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada and is a reminder of the trauma, discrimination, and racism many Indigenous Peoples have suffered and continue to suffer today.
As Russia’s war on Ukraine continues, the Ukrainian Canadian community is especially thankful to Indigenous Peoples in Canada for their strong support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.
As we celebrate and appreciate the rich history, customs, traditions, languages, and cultures of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, we acknowledge and reflect on the injustices of colonialism and the responsibility and obligation we have to ensure that the historical trauma, discrimination, and racism faced by Canada’s Indigenous Peoples are addressed.
