Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) issued the following statement in response to Canada’s ban on the import of Russian aluminum and steel, announced today by the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance:
The UCC welcomes the decision by Canada to ban the import of Russian aluminum and steel. For over a year, Russia has been waging a war of genocide against Ukraine, and some western companies still, inexplicably, do business in and with Russia.
The UCC will continue to advocate for the implementation by Canada and allies of a full trade embargo against Russia; the designation of Russia as a state supporter of terrorism; the expulsion of all Russian diplomats from Canada; and the more effective enforcement of sanctions already imposed by Canada against Russia.
Russia – a genocidal, terrorist state – must be treated as a pariah and isolated entirely from the international community.
