April 28, 2023. OTTAWA. April 28, 2023 marks the 76th anniversary of the beginning of the Wisla Operation (Akcja Wisła), the forcible deportation by the Soviet-backed Polish government of Ukrainians from their ancestral lands in what is today eastern Poland. Some 150,000 Ukrainians living in the Lemko, Boyko, Nadsianna, Kholm and Pidliashia regions were forcibly deported.
The forced deportation of the ethnic Ukrainian population from the region of “Zakerzonnia” was followed by the expropriation of Ukrainian property by the Polish state and the intentional assimilation of the ethnic Ukrainian population. Ukrainian language, culture and faith were prohibited in Communist Poland.
The Ukrainian people endured human, material, and spiritual losses. Countless lost their lives during and after this operation, buried far from their homes. Stripped of their ancestral lands, robbed of their possessions, and deprived of their cultural and educational institutions, Ukrainians were subjected to a forced resettlement that denied them any chance of a dignified life. The communist regime in Poland deprived Ukrainians of the possibility of a dignified life, leaving them scarred for generations to come.
Today we remember and honour the victims of Akcja Wisła. May this commemoration serve as a reminder that the dark pages of our history must be acknowledged and addressed, so that they never happen again.
Вшанування пам’яті жертв Операції Вісла
28 квітня 2023 року. ОТТАВА. 28 квітня 2023 року виповнюється 76 років з початку операції «Вісла», примусової депортації українців з історичних українських земель сьогоднішної східної Польщі. Цю депортацію провадив уряд Польщі за підтримки Радянського Союзу. Близько 150 000 українців, які жили в регіонах Лемківщини, Бойківщини, Надсяння, Холма та Підляшшя, були примусово депортовані.
Примусова депортація етнічного українського населення з регіону “Закерзоння” супроводжувалася конфіскацією власності українців польською державою та наміреною асиміляцією етнічного українського населення. У комуністичній Польщі була заборонена українська мова, культура та віра.
Український народ зазнав людських, матеріальних та духовних втрат. Безліч людей загинули під час та після цієї операції та були поховані далеко від своїх домівок. Позбавлені своїх батьківських земель, позбавлені своїх майнових користувань та позбавлені своїх культурних та освітніх установ, українці були піддані примусовій переселенні, що позбавило їх будь-якої можливості на гідне життя. Комуністичний режим у Польщі позбавив українців можливості на гідне життя, залишивши їх психологічно травмованими на десятиліття.
Сьогодні ми вшановуємо пам’ять жертв Акції Вісла. Нехай це вшанування стане нагадуванням, що ми повинні визнавати та пам’ятати темні сторінки історії щоб вони більше ніколи не повторилися. #AkcjaWisła
