June 10, 2023. OTTAWA, ON. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) welcomes the additional $500 million in military support for Ukraine announced today by the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, during a visit to Kyiv.
“The military assistance announced today by the Prime Minister is critical to ensuring the liberation of Ukrainian citizens and Ukrainian territory from brutal Russian occupation, stated Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the UCC, “The UCC and our community continue to advocate for increased military support to Ukraine. We are pleased that the Government of Canada continues to respond to Ukraine’s military and humanitarian needs.”
Earlier this week Russia committed another heinous act of terrorism – blowing up the dam at Kakhovka and causing immeasurable damage that will be felt for generations. For peace to return to Europe, Russia – a genocidal, terrorist state – must be defeated. It is critical that Canada and allies continue to do their part in assisting the heroic Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Ukrainian people.
In Kyiv today, Prime Minister Trudeau announced $500 million in military support:
- The extension of Canada’s military training mission Operation UNIFIER;
- Additional rounds of 105mm ammunition and Air-to-Surface missiles;
- Support for a tank maintenance centre in Poland;
- Contributions to multinational efforts for training pilots and maintenance and support for deployment of F16s.
Prime Minister Trudeau made several other announcements in Kyiv today, including the adoption of a Canada Ukraine Joint Declaration; strengthening of sanctions against Russia; humanitarian relief support; and other programs.
The UCC continues to advocate for substantial increase in military support to Ukraine by Canada and our allies, most recently before the House of Commons and Senate Defence Committees. More information, including UCC’s Policy Recommendations, is available here:
