July 17, 2023. OTTAWA. Today, the world commemorates the ninth anniversary of the downing of Flight MH-17.
On July 17, 2014, Malaysian Airlines Flight MH-17 was shot down over Russian-occupied territory in eastern Ukraine by a Russian Buk missile. All 298 people on board were murdered, including Canadian Andrei Anghel. The Russian Federation bears ultimate responsibility for this heinous act of international terrorism.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) joins the families and friends of the 298 innocent victims of Russia’s terrorist attack in mourning, grief and solemn remembrance.
Since shooting down Flight MH-17 nine years ago, Russia has continued its war of aggression against Ukraine and has continued to engage in and support acts of terrorism. Russia has murdered tens of thousands of innocent people. The UCC calls on the Government of Canada and our allies to designate the Russian Federation a state supporter of terrorism.
May the Memory of the Victims Be Eternal.
