September 6, 2023. OTTAWA, ON. Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), issued the following statement on the proscription of the Wagner group as terrorists by the government of the United Kingdom:
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) welcomes the designation of the Wagner group as a terrorist organization by the government of the United Kingdom. The UCC has long called for Canada to so designate Wagner. Canada’s Parliament unanimously called on the Government to designate the Wagner group a terrorist organization some eight months ago.
Inexplicably, the Canadian government has refused to take this important step to protect Canadians and our security. Now is the time for the Canadian government to do so.
The Wagner group sows terror and commits systemic atrocities and crimes against humanity against civilians anywhere its terrorists set foot.
For years, the Wagner group has carried out its sordid, vile crimes at the behest of the Russian state – and Canada needs to designate the Russian Federation a state supporter of terrorism.
