For two years the courageous Ukrainian people have stood together defending their country and freedom in Europe from Russian tyranny. At the forefront of the battle between good and evil – a battle that will define this generation – are Ukrainian women. Today we honour their courage and their determination.
In every aspect of Ukraine’s fight for freedom, Ukrainian women are playing a leading role. They are fighting in Ukraine’s Armed Forces. They are medics and doctors who save the lives of wounded Ukrainian soldiers. They are teachers who educate Ukrainian children in makeshift classrooms in subway stations. They are therapists who help heal the psychological scars of war. They are volunteers who provide aid and comfort to Ukrainian civilians displaced by Russia’s war. They are mothers and widows who bury their sons and husbands and stoically carry on. They are warriors who have fallen or were wounded in battle. They are the future of Ukraine. And they need our sustained and increased support.
On this International Women’s Day, we ask the Canadian government to substantially increase its military support for Ukraine. We know that anything short of Victory for Ukraine will invite further Russian aggression. Let us do all we can to ensure that Victory comes soon.
Слава Україні! Героям Слава!
Last year, UCC President Chyczij wrote about the role of Ukrainian women in ensuring Ukraine’s victory. You can read the piece here
