Today we mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. On June 6, 1944 Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy. We honour the courageous Canadians who fought for the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany. Over one million Canadians served in World War II.
Some 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed at Juno Beach. Over 100 Royal Canadian Navy ships and 10,000 Canadian sailors and 15 fighter and fighter-bomber squadrons of the Royal Canadian Air Force contributed to Operation Overlord. Many would not return home, giving their lives so that we may be free. Lest We Forget. Вічная Пам’ять.
Now, another tyranny seeks once again to extinguish the freedom of Europe. Russia wages a genocidal war of aggression against Ukraine. As we remember the sacrifices of the brave Canadians who fought for the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany, we resolve to do all in our power to assist the courageous Ukrainian people to defend the freedom of Ukraine – and Europe – today.
