Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) issued the following statement in response to the news that the G7 has agreed on a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, backed by the income from frozen Russian assets (Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) loans for Ukraine):
The UCC welcomes the G7’s decision to begin using Russian assets frozen in the West for Ukraine’s defence. We are grateful to the Canadian government for contributing approximately $5 billion to this G7 effort.
Russia continues to wage a genocidal war in Ukraine. Thousands of innocent civilians have been murdered, millions have been forcibly deported, homes and entire cities have been razed to the ground, the civilian infrastructure has been devastated. Russia must pay for these crimes against humanity.
Today’s announcement by the G7 is an historic step in holding Russia accountable for its brutality. To return peace to Europe and ensure justice, let us unite to do all in our power to ensure that Ukraine wins this war as quickly as possible.
