Dear Editor:
Your decision to publish Goran Tomasovic’s photo essay “Putin’s War” represents a grave editorial failure. By presenting Kremlin-approved material without critical context, The Globe and Mail risks legitimizing war crimes, amplifying disinformation, and distorting public understanding of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
The piece:
- Portrays members of the Russian Akhmat unit—documented perpetrators of torture, rape, and murder—as legitimate “special forces.”
- Humanizes Russian mercenaries responsible for atrocities.
- Relies on access granted by Moscow, specifically to secure favourable propaganda.
- Appears to have been produced, at least in part, on illegally occupied Ukrainian territory.
Your Editor’s Note acknowledges that you expected strong objections, yet you proceeded anyway—abandoning your newspaper’s responsibility to provide independent, accurate reporting.
This is not the first such lapse in your coverage of Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine. Whether you were misled or chose to platform disinformation, the publication of “Putin’s War” further damages your newspaper’s credibility.
Sincerely,
[NAME]
