The Ukrainian Canadian Congress awards the Shevchenko Medal to Oleksander Skocen as an expression of acknowledgement for his significant contribution towards the promotion and development of Ukrainian sport in Canada. Oleksander Skocen is a noted soccer player, sports activist and author of memoirs З футболом у світ. His sport career leads from Lviv through the displaced persons camps in Austria and Germany, to France and, finally, to Canada. Here he became an activist and sport instructor for Ukrainian youth. He participated actively in the affairs of the soccer club in a sports association “Tryzub”, was the editor of “Sports News” in the weekly Free Word and organized junior soccer teams. His book is an important contribution to the history of Ukrainian sport, especially soccer, in the interwar period in Halychyna, during the German occupation, and in the displaced persons camp after the war.
