Dear community members,
In 2008, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine, The Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation (UCCLF) initiated two projects that give Canadian students the opportunity to be recognised for their writing skills. Due to the positive response from Canadian youth, the Foundation has made these into annual competitions.
Please find attached two PDF documents.
One outlines details pertaining to the High School Civil Liberties Award and the other outlines details pertaining to the Civil Liberties Opinion-Editorial Award (open to both High School as well as Post-Secondary students). Please note that the deadline for each is different to accommodate the adjudication phase that is required for the High School Award. Either way, the goal is for announcements of winners to coincide with Holodomor Day commemorations in November, 2010.
We would greatly appreciate for this information to be distributed according to your organization’s common practices. If you have a periodic newsletter (or something similar), we would ask that an announcement notifying readers of these opportunities appear in the next possible edition. We would also add that similar notices are being distributed to local branches for their information.
We acknowledge that the deadlines are some time (and a summer’s worth of enjoyment) away; however, in the interest of getting students thinking about making submissions come autumn and/or in the event that they don’t wish to wait until then to make submissions, the information is available now. Pardon us in advance if you should receive a similar note with the same information in late August / early September.
UCCLF is in the process of creating a website. We are also in the preliminary stages of making ourselves available to students on-line via Facebook and Twitter. It is our goal to have these sources of information for students to consult in time for the start of the 2010-2011 school year in September.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Everyone is welcome to contact UCCLF@hotmail.com to find out more if necessary.
Thank you for your attention!
Yours very truly,
Andriy Harasymiw
UCCLF Scholarship Director
