May 3, 2016, OTTAWA. Ahead of the Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians, to be held in Regina, Saskatchewan on September 29-October 2, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has issued a call for nominations for the Taras Shevchenko Medal, the UCC Leadership Award and the UCC Youth Leadership Award of Excellence. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2016.
The Taras Shevchenko Medal is the highest form of recognition granted by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. It recognizes individuals of Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian descent for their outstanding national contribution to the Ukrainian Canadian community.
“The Shevchenko Medal recognizes outstanding achievement in community development, culture, the arts, education and sport. It is measured by the recipients’ level of excellence and initiative, their sustained body of work, peer recognition and the recipients’ impact both within and outside the Ukrainian Canadian community.” stated Michael Hantzsch, Chair of the UCC Awards & Recognition Committee.

The UCC Leadership Award was established in 2010. The UCC Leadership Award recognizes a worthy individual or organization that has made a significant national contribution to the development of the Ukrainian Canadian community; or a Ukrainian Canadian that has demonstrated individual excellence on a national scale in the areas of arts, culture, athletics, media, politics, business, entertainment, education, academia, health sciences, community or religious development, social services, civil society and leadership.

The UCC Youth Leadership Award of Excellence recognizes young persons of Ukrainian origin between 18 to 29 years old who has shown consistent involvement and a positive influence in the community life of Ukrainian Canadians. Leadership in the community can be expressed as excellence in: Communication; Initiative; Teamwork and Consensus Building; establishing a positive profile for the Ukrainian Canadian community.
