UCC to launch Holodomor Descendants’ Network in Canada
Ukraine remembers – the World acknowledges
April 8, 2021. OTTAWA, ON. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) calls on all descendants of Victims and Survivors of the Holodomor-Genocide of 1932-33 in Ukraine to join the Global Holodomor Descendants’ Network.
On April 21 at 8 PM EDT, the Network in Canada will be officially launched in an online event. During the event, information on how descendants can join the Network will be provided.

“For decades, Survivors of the Holodomor Famine-Genocide of 1932-33 courageously shared their stories and their experiences and made sure that the world knew about the Holodomor. Survivors have made an invaluable contribution to truth and justice, and to ensuring that such crimes are never repeated,” stated Irene Mycak, Chair of the UCC National Holodomor Awareness Committee. “As time passes, fewer and fewer Survivors are able to continue this vital work. It now falls to descendants to be the unique voice that will continue to share familial stories and keep our memory of the millions of innocent victims of the Holodomor forever alive.”
The goals of the Holodomor Descendants’ Network are to:
- Create a space for personal familial stories to have a perpetual voice
- Raise awareness of the enduring trauma that affects generations of survivors’ families
- Remember the millions of innocent Ukrainians who suffered at the hands of Stalin’s regime
- Advocate the facts of the Holodomor-Genocide to dispel disinformation and denial
- Inform about the Holodomor
A descendant is anyone who has a blood relative(s) that either perished during or survived the Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine.
About the Holodomor
In 1932-33, the Soviet Communist regime of Joseph Stalin sought to destroy the Ukrainian nation and turned food into a weapon. All food and grain in Ukraine were confiscated, any resistance brutally crushed. Millions of innocent people – children, women, men– were murdered for no crime other than the desire to live free in their own land, to speak their language, to celebrate their ancient traditions and culture.
This act of Genocide is known as the Holodomor. Until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, this genocide was covered up and denied by the Soviet authorities. Only after independence were the Ukrainian people able to mourn the millions of victims of this genocide and to speak freely about and study the devastating effects of the Holodomor on their nation.

8-го квітня, 2021 р. ОТТАВА, ОН. Конґрес Українців Канади закликає всіх нащадків жертв та свідків Голодомору-Геноциду 1932-33 рр. приєднатися до Світової Мережі Нащадків Голодомору.
21-го квітня, о 8-ій вечора за Східним часом, Мережу буде офіційно представлено під час он-лайн заходу (в англійській мові). Під час заходу буде поширено інформацію про те, як нащадки зможуть приєднатися до Мережі.

“Протягом десятиліть, Свідки Голодомору-Геноциду 1932-33 років хоробро ділились своїми свідченнями та пережиттями, запевняючи, щоб світ дізнався про Голодомор. Свідки зробили неоціненний внесок, розповідаючи правду та запевняючи справедливість, – гарантуючи неповторення подібних злочинів,” заявила Ірина Мицак, Голова Всеканадського комітету в справі Голодомору Конґресу Українців Канади. “З плином часу, все менше і менше свідків можуть продовжувати цю надважливу роботу. Тепер, нащадки повинні стати тим унікальним голосом, який ділитиметься сімейними історіями та зберігатиме пам’ять про мільйони невинних жертв Голодомору назавжди.”
Цілі Мережі нащадків Голодомору:
– Служити постійним простором для збереження історій
– Підвищувати обізнаність про травму поколінь, яка впливає на покоління нащадків жертв Голодомору
– Пам’ятати мільйони невинних українців які постраждали від сталінського режиму
– Поширювати факти Голодомору-Геноциду для розвіяння дезінформації та заперечення цього злочину
– Інформувати про Голодомор.
Нащадок Голодомору – це особа, яка має кровного родича, хто загинув під час або був очевидцем Голодомору 1932-33 років в Україні.
