June 21, 2021. OTTAWA, ON. Today, Canada marks National Indigenous Peoples Day. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress joins all Canadians in recognizing the enduring and central contribution that the First Nations, Inuit, and the Métis Nation have made to Canada.
Today is a day to celebrate the rich cultures, languages, heritage, identity, traditions and history of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. But it is also a day to reflect on the injustices of colonialism and the collective responsibility and obligation that we have to ensure that the historical trauma, discrimination, and racism faced by Canada’s Indigenous Peoples are addressed, with empathy and compassion.
Today, OMNI Television will broadcast Ancestors and Elders, featuring multidisciplinary Indigenous artists and Shumka Dancers – a story of the first Ukrainian newcomers to Canada, exploring the shared values and respected differences between these hopeful settlers and the First Nations people they encounter in a new land.
